Is a Sheltie the right dog for you?

You may see the cutest puppy in the world that you just HAVE to take home...but is that a good reason to buy a dog? Please think carefully and know that this is a pet that will be with you for as long as 15 years! I have seen many dogs of different breeds come to my training classes that are just not right for their owners. This causes stress and unhappiness for the dog as well as the owner. Shelties are a loyal and intelligent breed. But does that mean they are easy to train? Well, it depends on what you want to train them for. Yes, they housetrain easily. But an unneutered male of any breed can be a problem if they are not carefully looked after. Shelties learn what you teach them easily because they are bred to work closely with people. However, any puppy can be sooo cute when they are misbehaving that it is easy to inadvertently teach the wrong things! Shelties are a herding breed, which causes them to chase anything that moves, sometimes your feet or running children...this can cause a problem if you allow them to practice it. They can be very vocal. They don’t need much encouragement to become too noisy. Shelties also teach themselves games you may not like if you don’t offer appropriate games and activities! Each Sheltie has his or her own personality…That is why picking the right pup for you is sooo important! If you understand these aspects of the Sheltie, you can have an endearing relationship with this wonderful breed.
